I was interested in how the Shroud is used to try and create an image of Jesus (http://blogs.pioneerlocal.com/religion). There is so much speculation on his physical appearance, and the authenticity of the Shroud goes to the heart of some of the questions.

I need to make a comment about the note titled: How do you know that the radiocarbon sample was not valid for dating the shroud of turin.
The note goes into details about a fluorescence study of the c14 sample area. It shows a picture that is supposed to prove a different chemical composition in that area.
If you print the picture in -grayscale- all the picture really shows is the difference in light source intensity from the upper right/and right side of the picture. The difference in light intensity is the result of poor uniformity of the light source. The dark area at the sample point (upper right of white triangle) looks to be the result of the curvature of the cloth at that point and the lower light source intensity. This fluorescence testing was poorly done. The results prove nothing about the real chemistry of the shroud.

continued comment from above -
There are ways to correct for varying light source intensity in fluorescence spectroscopy. By using instruments to measure the fluorescent refractive and reflective indexes and derivatives - this was obviously not done - it's simple not a scientific test at all.

The Italian group think that they may have been able to recreate the Shroud of Turin. Maybe they have? But, I'd love for them to try and recreate the coffee stained image of the Virgin Mary I personally have. A few photos of the image can be found here on Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7690119@N03/sets/72157617453203072/detail/

Shroud Of Turin

Excellent topic.

I would like to one day be a day at a conference on the Shroud of Turin and know the truth about the mystery behind it.

Greetings!

TIME Magazine . . .

  • TIME called it, "The Riddle of the Ages." National Geographic called it, "One of the most perplexing enigmas of modern times."

Now, in 2008, Evangelicals, Catholics, Anglicans, Baptists, Methodists and Christians of many traditions are realizing how mysterious the Shroud of Turin is. If it is a burial shroud, as it seems to be, it is evidence of the resurrection of Jesus. No more reason is needed than this: Burial shrouds don't survive tombs.
